Period Pain
Period pain is a normal part of the menstrual cycle and most women will experience it in their lifetime.
BackCommon Symptoms
- Painful muscle cramps in the tummy, which can spread to the back and thighs
- Pain sometimes comes in intense spasms
- Pain may be dull but constant
- You may get pelvic pain when you do not have your period
Treatment at home
- Painkillers like ibuprofen (ask your pharmacist)
- Exercise
- Stop smoking – smoking is thought to increase the risk of period pain
- Heat – put a heat pad on your tummy
- Warm bath or shower
- Light abdomen massage
- Relaxation – e.g., activities such as yoga or pilates
- TENS device – delivers a mild current to your tummy to reduce pain
When should I book a GP?
- You have severe period pain
- Your normal pattern of periods changes – i.e. if they become heavier than usual or irregular
